I think that Dream Awake by Jose Marti was influenced by the Culture of Cuba. I think this because during the time he wrote this poem, Cuba was ruled by a different country. And they treated there people horrible. “I always see a floating child who is calling me!” I believe that he is dreaming about helping the children of Cuba break free from cruel treatment from the government. “And merrily riding on the gentle neck of a mighty lion, monarch of my heart.” I believe that Jose Marti’s heart is telling him to be brave and take a risk even if he is going against what the government has to say.

I think that this poem by Jose Marti is influenced by Cuban culture. In this poem, Jose says "My poetry is a wounded deer, looking for the forests sanctuary." I believe this is refering to how he, and many other people, have suffered under the current government. I also think this means he is searching for freedom from this government. Another part of this poem is "My poems please the brave". I think this means he is supporting all the other people who are fighting for their rights, and gives hope to all the other people afraid to stand up for themselves.

The Cuban Government is a really harsh dictatorship that doesn't care what its people think. They love to think about their own materialistic empowerment. "Your eyes were two flames," could show the aggressive, fiery anger of the government. The poem could show that the government is also seen different by many people, "so lovely and yet so villainous," some like it, such as the rich which have some control over people, while others hate and "abhor" it. When the poem says, "Because you were vile and devious," could show that the government is dishonest and does things unseen by the people yet still affects the people.
